The Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Proposals

Here's an interesting article that Sunset Beach Weddings blogged about.  It was on the front page of the yahoo.com feed.  Good info for planning your engagement this holiday season.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Proposals

The Do’s and Don’ts of Holiday Proposals
Photo: Corbis
More people will get engaged over the holiday season than any other time of year, and if your fiancé is one of the 30 percent of men planning to get down on bended knee, you may want to share this story with him.
Does he know that the ring shouldn’t be your only holiday gift? Is he aware that putting a small box under the tree could ruin the surprise? Or how he can embrace everything from seasonal décor to holiday sales to help set the stage? Yahoo Style checked in with Sarah Pease, founder of the website The Proposal Expert and a few blushing brides with real stories to share. Consider this your ultimate Holiday-Season Proposal Guide.
Do:  Pop the Question Over the Holidays
If you plan on celebrating the holidays with your family (or families), you have a built-in engagement party right after you say yes!
“Celebrating your engagement with family and friends, whether they live close by or you’re traveling to be with them, is the best reason to get engaged over the Christmas break,” says Sarah.
True Story: One groom-to-be proposed to his future brideat a pre-holiday bash.
“For the first time in 12 years my girlfriends and I invited our boyfriends and husbands to join us at a Christmas party,” newlywed Meredith tells Yahoo Style. As the girls sat for their annual group photo, Josh jumped in to say a few words.
“As he was talking my friends started to pet me and I just knew he was going to propose,” Meredith remembers. The couple celebrated with their friends for a few hours and then visited her parents to share their exciting news.
Do:  Take Advantage of In-store and Online Sales
Jewelers, just like every other retailer, will kick-off holiday sales right around now. Sarah advises that guys take advantage of discounts and deals on engagement rings, which can save them hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
Do:  Embrace the Season
Take advantage of the holiday decorations all around you when planning your proposal. Even for guys on a budget there are plenty of inexpensive ways to create a memorable and even magical proposal. Sarah suggests renting out the local holiday lights display for 15 minutes privately and popping the question, or visiting your town’s local Christmas tree late one night when it’s quiet and the snow is falling, and hire some carolers to sing while you propose.
True Story: When Josh decided to propose to Shereen he decided to recreate an old family tradition of picking out their Christmas tree at a rural tree farm. Working with the staff at Summit Tree Farm, Josh decorated one tree with ornaments and the phrase “Marry Me,” and surprised Shereen as she walked through the rows and rows of trees.
Don’t:  Be Just Another Stereotype
If you’re going to choose a location that is quite common, such as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree or Times Square’s Jumbotron on New Year’s Eve, at least make the moment as personal as possible. For example, if you’re going to pop the question on the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center talk to the staff in advance about playing music that is special to you, have family and friends standing by the edge of the rink to celebrate after, or include photos of the two of you in some way.
“If you decide to choose a popular place make it as personalized as possible,” advises Sarah.
True story: David decided to propose to Kari during a tripto New York and when Kari mentioned she wanted to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree he knew exactly where he’d pop the question. Working with the rink, and local planner Fallon Carter Weddings, David arranged for the rink to play “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel and had several staff members skate around them holding large photos of the two of them. While thousands of tourists cheered, David got down on one knee and asked Kari to marry him.
Don’t:  Put the Ring Under the Tree
“Unless it’s in a decoy box,” advises Sarah. “None of my clients have ever done this but I’m sure there’s some bonehead out there that’s just dropped the ring box under the tree beforehand and ruined the surprise.”
Don’t:  Forget to Buy Her a Holiday Gift
While you may think that your proposal and the ring is a great holiday gift, it shouldn’t be the only item under the tree, especially if you’re not proposing on Christmas Day. “You’ve got to get your partner at least one other thing, even if it’s small or even a decoy, so she has a gift from you under the tree,” says Sarah.
Don’t:  Forget to Get the Ring Insured
With all the money spent on an engagement ring, you would feel awful if it got lost or stolen, right? To protect yourself talk to your home owner’s insurance company about adding the ring to it, or better yet, buy an insurance plan with a company that specializes in jewelry insurance, guaranteeing you full reimbursement if it gets lost or stolen.
True Story: One unlucky bride decided not to wear her engagement ring while traveling because she thought it would be safer at home. Unfortunately, while they were away the couple’s apartment was broken into and the bride’s new engagement ring was stolen along with other valuables. Luckily the groom had gotten the ring insured with Lavalierso the full cost of the ring, over $20,000, was paid to him to purchase the same exact ring for his bride.
Don’t:  Overshadow Another Big Family Announcement
If your sister is announcing her first pregnancy, or another relative’s milestone is going to be celebrated at your family’s holiday gathering you may want to wait to announce your exciting news.  While you may be bursting at the seams to propose or announce that you’re engaged, it will be better to wait to celebrate a few days later, than try to eclipse someone else’s announcement.
Do:  Make it Personal
Wherever you decide to propose, make it meaningful by selecting a location that is special to your relationship, including family and friends, or designing the proposal to include personal elements that reflect who you are as a couple.
True Story: When Tim was planning to propose to Brittany she was sure that he would pop the question over the Christmas holiday, but when Dec. 25 came and went she assumed that it just wasn’t the right time. Little did she know that Tim was planning a holiday-themed proposal for Jan. 5 —a few days after they celebrated their first anniversary.
“I just thought proposing on Christmas or on our anniversary was a little cliché,” Tim tells Yahoo Style. After church that Sunday, Tim took Brittany to lunch and then a garden center that allowed him to incorporate their love of the outdoors without having to worry about inclement weather interfering with his plans.
“It had the benefits of having an outdoor feeling indoors, with left over fake Christmas trees and a fake pond structure,” he explains. As they walked to the back of the store, Brittany was pleasantly surprised to see photos of her and Tim over the past year hanging off of the branches. They walked passed the trees and sat at a bench at the end where Tim got down on one knee and proposed.

Staying on Budget for your Florida Beach Wedding! An article

Here's another informative article from Sandy Malone at Brides.com titled "5 Easy Ways to Blow Your Wedding Budget."  These are all great tips and can be applied to your Destination Beach Wedding in Florida!

Wedding Budget Saving Tips
Photo: Getty Images
All brides and grooms start out with what they believe is a "realistic" wedding budget. If you're working with a wedding planner, he or she should be able to help you with the numbers and create a guestimate of what everything will cost when you add it all up and include gratuities.
With that said, only you can blow your budget. Your wedding planner isn't the one who is actually spending your money — you are. You will be given options and you will make decisions and sign contracts. End of day, you were the one who couldn't live without the sparkler tunnel or the second wedding gown.
Here's a list of the top five things that will cause you to blow your wedding budget:
1. Choosing the top-level bar at all of your events.
Do you really need to serve Bombay Sapphire gin and Belvedere vodka? After the first few drinks, it doesn't even matter what kind of booze it is — they'll keep on drinking. Serving a lower level of bar doesn't make you look cheap — you're still providing an open bar for quite a long period of time.
2. Overdoing it with flowers and décor.
Are you getting married in a beautiful venue or outdoor location? If the room is already exquisite or you're already in the midst of an amazing garden, don't try to gild the lily. Less is often more in this situation.
3. Extending your wedding reception to run all night.
Every additional hour costs you more money on everything. None of the event staff can begin breakdown or cleanup until your wedding is over. So you have to pay to keep the kitchen staff, the service staff, security, the wedding planners, the music and maybe even your photographer if you really want those crazy late-night shots. This can add on mega bucks to your budget.
4. Having a huge wedding party.
Do you really need eight bridesmaids, four junior bridesmaids, and three flower girls? The cost of the flowersfor the bridal party alone will go into the thousands by the time you're done. Plus, don't forget you must buy gifts!

5. Trying to provide transportation for everyone.
It's a smart (and safe) idea to have a "drunk bus" on hand late night to get guests back to the hotel safely, but don't feel like it's your responsibility to get your guests to and from your actual wedding and reception and their accommodations. Half of the time, they'd rather drive their own rental cars and have control of how long they stay. They don't like feeling stuck. Unless the hotel has a free shuttle on hand, don't try to coordinate everybody.
Owner of Weddings in Vieques, a destination-wedding planning company off the coast of Puerto Rico, Sandy Malone has helped countless couples plan their big day since 2007.

It's time to start thinking about your Florida Wedding Details - what colors will you be choosing?

Here's a blog article from Weddinginvieques.com written by Chelsey-the-Intern about the significance of wedding colors.  Go to our website  www.beachelope.com and look through the "Packages" section to see many color and decoration options for your Destin Beach Wedding.

Wedding Colors Set the Vibe for Your Wedding Guests – Guest Blog by Chelsey-the-Intern

Your wedding day is the one day it can and should be ALL ABOUT YOU. Every detail, from the centerpieces to your wedding party attire, should be reflect the bride and groom’s styles and personalities. Not only should the physical elements of the wedding scream your names, but also the overall mood. One of the most powerful ways to accomplish this is through the use of color.

Not only are the colors you choose for your wedding the heart from which your décor, flowers and attire originate, but they also set the mood and personality for the entire event. If you have a message to deliver, or want your guests to feel a certain way when they enter the venue, you don’t necessarily have to pick a theme, just pick a color scheme the promotes that kind of energy.

And because your wedding day is, after all, the day that is ALL about you and your fiancé, you’ll want to choose colors that display your personalities as a couple! Whether you’re outgoing, laidback, adventurous or traditional, you’ll want to choose a wedding color scheme that relays that message to your guests. There are a handful of ways you can coordinate colors to match your personality.
Larry and Fernando's big red wedding included hundreds of different shades of red roses and carnations, plus a dozen other red accents. It was the only color they used and it set the tone for a raging reception!

For example, a bride and groom who are outgoing may choose a bright color like red because red is associated with energy as well as passion, desire and love. Guests at a red wedding can most likely expect a lively party!

A couple who chooses to use pale pink and ivory sets more of an elegant, soft-spoken vibe. Their guests can expect simplistic details and a more mellow celebration.

On the theme side of things, if a bride and groom want to make their guests feel like they’re on the ocean, they could choose a beach or tropical theme. They might go with colors such as aqua, sand and white, or bright orange, hot pink and parrot green. Bright tropical colors send the message that guests can expect a lively and joyous party, while shades of sea glass imply something more soothing and serious.

If a bride and groom decided to go with a garden theme, they might choose a more natural look such as whites and ivories, along with specks of greens and browns. These colors deliver an elegant and comforting feeling. The popularity of using succulents in bouquets and décor has exploded in garden themes.

As the bride and groom, you need to decide what you want the vibe of your wedding to be. The next step would be to choose either a theme or a color palette that can assist you in accomplishing just that. Since I didn’t know what all the colors meant when I started this blog, I can only assume that quite a few brides and grooms are in the same position. Here is a breakdown of what emotions some specific colors may evoke:
Shades of Pink
Light Pink: Happy, Playful, Fun
Hot Pink: Bold, Energized

Shades of Purple
Purple: Mysterious, Glamorous, Grown-up
Lavender: Softy, Dainty, Ladylike

Shades of Blue
Aqua: Fun-loving, Fresh, Vibrant, Tropical
Royal Blue: Grand, Traditional, Happily-Ever-After
Navy: Ultra-classic, Alternative to Black

Shades of Green
Lighter Green: Reminiscent of Nature, Calm, Laidback, Relaxed
Brighter Green: Energetic, Fun, Creative

Shades of Red
Passionate, Dramatic, Desire, Romantic, Energetic

Shades of Yellow
Optimism, Cheerfulness, Appreciation for Friendship

Shades of Orange
Creative, Fun-loving, Joyfulness, Enthusiasm, Optimism

White
Pure, privileged, modern, Innocence, Cleanliness

Ivory
Elegant, Old-World, Soft-Spoken

Gold
Lavishness, Luxury, Warmth, Tradition

Silver
Restrained Wealth, Glamour, Sophistication

Gray
Modern, Understated, Sleek, Peace

Black
Timeless, Stylish, Sophisticated (but beware – it’s also considered the color of mourning in much of the world and not all of your older guests may considerate an “appropriate” wedding color despite the fact it has been in style for years)

Brown
Comforting, Patience, Conservative, Reliable

Remember, most elements of your wedding such as the flowers, décor, attire, and cake use the color as the basis. You may use as much or as little color as you wish. The more color you use, the stronger the mood will be.

There are some things to keep in mind as you choose your colors or theme. If you have already chosen a venue, you may want to take its decor into consideration (i.e. If the venue has a color scheme of purple and green you probably won’t want to go with red and navy blue as your colors. If the venue you’re using features bold colors, it’s likely that some color palettes may clash).

Depending on where you’re getting married, keep the season in mind. Seasonal colors vary and you are definitely not limited to using what reflects the weather outside wherever you’re getting married, but it’s good to have an idea of how to play it up if you like. Spring colors usually consist of pastels and colors that resemble those first flowers poking out of the ground after winter. Consider muted pinks, greens, purples, blues, browns, white, ivory and grays.

Bright, fun, pops of color can be associated with summer weddings. The hot colors resemble summer: popsicles, sun, bright flowers, fruit, the beach, etc. Think bright pinks, oranges, yellows, corals and various shades of blue.

Autumn weddings call for earthy tones. The dramatic change of the season can be a huge help when planning an autumn wedding. Picture the falling leaves: oranges, reds, yellows, mossy greens, purples, and browns.

Although winter is a season of frigid cold, it makes for beautiful weddings. Winter is a time where metallic colors are especially popular! Because there are so many inspiring holidays in winter, there are a slew of colors to choose from in your theme. Think reds, greens, purples, blues, pinks, grays, gold, silver, white, ivory, black, and tans.

When in doubt, start with a color that you’ve always loved and work from there. Or look at using neutrals. Neutrals, despite what some may say, are not boring. They are extremely easy to add splashes of color to and look great in every venue!

The most important thing to remember is that there is no set of rules that you have to follow when choosing your wedding colors, it’s your day!

Cheers!
